Work starts on £7 million new teaching block for Wiltshire school
Construction work has begun on a new 23-classroom, £7 million teaching block at Matravers School in Westbury, Wiltshire.
The project being carried out by Midas Construction, part of the Midas Group, will provide high-quality teaching facilities for pupils and replace older existing facilities currently on the site.
It is the latest in a series of significant investments being made in the school for the benefit of pupils and the wider community, through the government’s Priority School Building 2 programme.
The new building designed by NVB Architects is expected to be completed by October 2019 and will house science, maths, ICT, technology and general teaching classrooms.
The phasing of the project is being carried out to minimise disruption and avoid the need for temporary classrooms and will see the new three-storey 2,393sq m development built by Midas prior to the demolition and landscaping of an existing two-storey building on the school site.
Midas was appointed via the Southern Construction framework to carry out the scheme.
Derek Quinn, Executive Director at Midas Construction, said: “We are delighted to see the start of work on site at Matravers and we are looking forward to working with the school to produce a superb building that will bring a range of benefits to students and staff as well as the local community.”
The Matravers project continues Midas’ strong track record in the education sector – including work commissioned through the Southern Construction Framework - with the Group having delivered 55 education projects worth £207 million in the last three years alone.
Midas Construction was also appointed in November 2017 to the £8 billion Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) Framework, which is set to drive major investment in schools and other education facilities over the next two years, providing the potential for further activity in the sector for Midas in the South West, South East and the Midlands.
Midas is one of the UK's largest independent construction and property services providers. The company’s strategy is to become the contractor of choice in the areas in which it operates, by developing long-term relationships through the delivery of its vision to be leaders in customer service and performance. It is a strategy which is already showing success with more than 75% of the Group’s projects being carried out on a repeat business basis.
