Work begins at new £10 million Holiday Inn Express Hotel in Bridgwater
Midas Construction, and its customer Zeal Hotels, have marked the start of work on a new £10 million Holiday Inn Express just outside Bridgwater.
The 138 bedroom hotel will be the largest in the area and will be situated at Junction 24 of the M5 motorway. It is being built in part to accommodate future workers and visitors to the nuclear power station Hinkley Point C.
A ground-breaking ceremony marked the beginning of the project which is already seeing Midas Construction, part of the Midas Group, carrying out preliminary works on site. The main construction phase will get under way in March with a projected completion of spring 2019.
The hotel will be constructed using a pre-cast concrete frame method and built to Holiday Inn Express’s Generation 4 specifications – only the second of its kind within the hotel group. Pre-glazed windows will be installed into panels off site before being fitted.
In addition to the 138 bedrooms, there will also be a spacious bar and restaurant, lounge area, two meeting rooms and car parking for more than 60 vehicles.
Grant Millar, Operational Manager at Midas Construction, said: “This project is an important milestone for Midas Construction, with the innovative use of this particular type of pre-cast concrete framing. We have considerable experience in the team of using off-site fabrication techniques, which allows a significant amount of the build process to take place remotely before components are brought to site for final assembly and installation.
“By using local contractors, the project will be contributing to local employment and as a company we plan to something give back by completing community projects in and around Bridgwater.”
Tim Wheeldon, Managing Director of Zeal Hotels, said: “Bridgwater is quickly becoming established as a major gateway to the South West and there is presently a limited supply of quality branded hotel accommodation in the area. This location will not only benefit the increasing transient M5 motorway traffic but more importantly it will service the increased local demand for accommodation in the area.
“The development of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station is also a factor and the hotel will provide quality hotel accommodation at a reasonable price.
“Zeal Hotels is pleased to appoint Midas Construction in this project. Midas will bring a wealth of local and professional construction knowledge to the development of this hotel.”
