Work experience helps Matt choose a career

( Last Updated: 18-07-2011 )

Truro student Matt Murphy is closer to choosing a career path after spending a week's work experience with contractors, Midas Construction.

Matt & PaulThe 15 year-old Year 10 student at the Richard Lander School in Truro spent a week with Midas where he was introduced to management and learned how the business works at the company's Indian Queens offices before undertaking a number of site visits.

Site visits included developments at Treliske Hospital, the £35m Heartlands Community Project in Redruth and the County Arms in Truro, a 33 bedroom hotel extension to one of St Austell brewery's landmark pubs.

Matt said: "It was a fantastic week which gave me a real insight to how construction really works and who does what.  Everyone at Midas was so helpful and gave me their full attention.

"At the County Arms I had a full sub-contractors induction and Paul Gendall, the Senior Site Manager, showed me over the whole site and explained the different stages of the project.  The hotel opened for business recently, but Midas is still involved in finishing the car park and reinstating the external features.

"I have been interested in the construction industry for some time and the combination of talking to the Midas management and the site visits has made me think that I should be looking for a course in business and construction studies when I'm ready to go on to college or university."

Midas' Paul Gendall commented: "We all enjoyed Matt's visit.  He showed a keen interest and understood the technicalities of what's going on.  If his future ability matches his current enthusiasm, I'm sure Midas will be interested in employing him in a few years time."
