Time capsule for Shaldon Primary School

( Last Updated: 28-03-2011 )

The time capsule is buriedChildren at Shaldon Primary School near Teignmouth will be assisting Midas Construction when the contractor buries a time capsule on the site of the school's new buildings.

There are only eight weeks to go before the new set of school buildings are handed over including a school hall, administrative offices and two classrooms.

Steve Pollard, Midas Senior Site Manager for the £1.3 million contract, said: "Despite the project being such a challenging one on a very tight site, we have enjoyed very good relationships with everyone involved with the school and at Devon County Council and have worked very hard to minimise any disruption to the school's everyday activity..

"As the project draws to a close, we thought it would be a really nice gesture to facilitate the burying of a time capsule for future generations to learn something about the school and the people involved with it today.  Midas will be contributing a set of plans of the new work to go alongside the items chosen by the school."

Devon's Cabinet Member for Schools and Skills, Christine Channon, said: "Shaldon Primary School is one of Devon's most outstanding schools. I am delighted that the county council has been able to provide new facilities which are a match for the quality which the school achieves academically and in other areas of its work."

The challenging 50 week contract on the site with very limited access required existing classrooms and a reception block to be relocated to temporary accommodation.  Following the handover of the new buildings in early June, Midas Construction will stay on site to complete external work and landscaping.
