Midas Retail took on the challenging role as the main contractor for an £8 million design and build scheme to deliver a new Tesco superstore and petrol station on a brownfield site in the market town of Tiverton, mid Devon. The 40,000 sq ft sales area includes a large bakery, delicatessen counters and an extensive non-food department.
Within a tight timeframe, Midas Retail successfully supervised the design team and worked closely with the local town council, Environment Agency and Highways Authority to satisfy some exacting planning conditions relating to flood elevation, river works and ground contamination.
Midas Retail offered Tesco a huge cost saving by initiating an innovative ground remediation strategy. A permeable reactive barrier was installed that, over time, allows the pollution from a former gas works to be cleansed by the natural flow of ground water through the site.
