Following withdrawal of the existing contractor, Midas Retail had just one week lead-in to get the 91,885 sq ft flagship, format 60 superstore on-site.
A steel insulated cladding system on a steel frame with a trocol roof was used and a full 7.5 m height shop front incorporated. The sales area covered 60,000 sq ft and incorporated a new café format. Modular construction was used for the petrol filling station.
Based on a 14 acre site, additional challenges presented by the project included constructing the building alongside an existing, functioning Tesco store which led to lack of car parking and storage space within the site footprint.
Using its expertise in programming and logistics, Midas Retail completed the first 21-week phase on time. The new store was delivered with minimum disruption to existing shoppers (disruption figures were well below Tesco's anticipated figure of 7%) and hand-over between the existing and new store was smooth, with no loss of trading.
Following successful completion of the store, Midas Retail has been awarded further contracts by Tesco as part of its on-going refurbishment programme.
