Midas is delighted to have completed the ‘turret placing' at the Zennor Building at Penwith College in Penzance. The project is one of the last jobs that was given the go ahead for Learning Skills Council (LSC) funding before the recent and well publicised review of new projects.
The flagship Zennor building will house a multi-purpose theatre, a training kitchen, music practice rooms, hair and beauty salons and additional teaching rooms. The 6.4 tonne turret on the main roof of the building, located over the glazed entrance atrium, will form the pinnacle of the building and will be highest point on the whole scheme.
The topping out celebration is held when the highest point of a new building has been constructed. It is a celebration to thank the workers for their efforts, to acknowledge their safe working and to wish those continuing the construction, a safe completion.

Guests watched as the turret was craned into place on top of the building and then had a brief tour of the building. Afterwards they retired to the lawn of the Treneere Manor for afternoon tea.
Murdo Mace, Executive Director, Midas Construction, said:
"We welcome the news from the LSC last week that they are reinstating funding for 13 projects. We are delighted to have reached the top of the Zennor building with the 'turret placing'. This is an outstanding project for Midas to be involved with and we are looking forward to building one of the best educational facilities in the South West."
Jonathan Burnett, Principal of Truro and Penwith College, said:
"We are very pleased that the re-development is now well underway and to see the plans taking shape. We will move the College into the two new buildings while the remainder of the redevelopment takes place. Truro and Penwith College has an established reputation as one of the highest quality providers in the county. We are determined to establish a tertiary college in Penzance where students will be able to have the best facilities and resources in a superb environment that will be second to none."
Midas Construction has been on site at Penwith since January this year to construct six new buildings in two phases to provide new teaching and recreational facilities for students at the college. The first phase will be completed in December 2009 and the second phase; and therefore completion of the project, will be in December 2010.
The Porthcurno building, also part of the first phase, will have facilities for sport, science laboratories and further teaching accommodation. Treneere Manor will receive a conversion of its current state to provide upgraded facilities on the recently acquired land by the College.
In addition a sustainability programme is in place to include ground source heat pumps. A 100kw wind turbine will also be erected to contribute free energy to the heat pumps.
The build replaces all existing facilities with the exception of the Nanjizal building which will receive a light refurbishment.
