The Zennor Building is the flagship building in the £28 million redevelopment of Penwith College. The complete scheme includes 11,000 m2 of new build together with the refurbishment of two existing buildings which will increase the existing accommodation by over 5,000 m2.
The building includes an auditorium, which required careful acoustic planning and treatment, music and drama facilities, multiple lecture theatres, a training kitchen, music practice rooms, hair and beauty salons and flexible teaching spaces.
All works were undertaken in a live campus environment and involved extensive strategic planning and working closely with senior representatives from the College.
The form of construction is consistent across each new building, including a steel frame structure on traditional pads and strips with metal deck and single ply membrane to the roof. The envelope is cladded with an innovative concrete composite panel system and in-filled with anodized aluminium windows and curtain walling.
The energy performance and management will be monitored remotely from the College and a key feature of the design is the 100KW wind turbine, providing energy to subsidise the Ground Source Heat Pumps which is the primary heating source for the new buildings. The building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.
