The Horndean store consisted of a new cafe floor extension, existing sales floor modifications and various car park and external works alterations. The project itself was split into 2 stages, stage one being completion of externals and main substructure, and stage 2 being the completion of the new café, removal of existing café and existing sales floor modifications (31 weeks).
The building construction consisted of pile foundations 12m deep on a 3m grid, suspended ground beams and floor slab, steel frame construction, brick/block walls, metal clad Trocal roof system, with standard shop fit interior works. The build process itself was carried out over a 6 day working week, with both day shift and night shift working to meet the tight deadlines.
The client was constantly looking for cost saving aspects and one that was carried out was the reduction of the overall building size to eliminate the diversion of existing services within the ground. During the build process, the main store was to remain operational with no effect to the public, customers and staff and to limit the effect on the trading figures of the store. This was carried out with the continued liaison between Midas and the store management team, sometimes consisting of 3/4 meetings daily to ensure activities could be carried out without disruption.
