A Midas built rehabilitation centre has struck gold by winning the prestigious Michelmores/Western Morning News Commercial Property Awards in the category of Project of the Year under £3 million.
The Boswyns Drug Detox Centre near Hayle is a 15 bed residential detoxification facility which provides residential drug users with medial, nursing, social and educational support and is the only facility of its kind in Cornwall.
Designed by architects Stride Treglown and built Midas Construction's Devon & Cornwall business, sustainability and resource efficiency were the focus for the scheme with the adoption of alternative construction methods utilised throughout.
The building is timber framed with timber cladding and lime render. Hemp insulation with a lime render was utilised, creating a naturally efficient, energy saving, acoustic insulation to the building. Biomass heating was also installed.
A Sedum roof creates an aesthetic harmony with its surrounding environment and provides ecological benefits. Visually, great care was taken to manage the landscaping so that the building appears in synergy with its environment, blending perfectly with the lines of the land.
Care was also taken to arrange early engagement with the local supply chain both to engineer cost values and to source local and renewable materials. Many of the building elements were manufactured off-site and minimising waste and maximising recycling.
Midas Divisional Director Mike O'Neill said: "We are delighted to win this award for a building that is going to change the lives of many people in the years to come.
"We have recently completed a number of high profile projects in Devon & Cornwall including Penwith College in Penzance and the Peninsula Dental School in Plymouth and are just starting on a a number of new contracts so I believe we will have some very competitive entries for next years awards."
