Midas Construction, part of the Midas Group, has recently reached the top of the replacement Police Station in Bodmin. The topping out celebration is traditionally held when the highest point of a building has been constructed. It is a celebration to thank the workers for their efforts, to honour their safe working and to wish safety for those about to complete the construction.

The project involves the construction of a three story Police station for Devon & Cornwall Constabulary, incorporating a number of different departments Traffic, Armed Response Vehicles, Major Crime Investigation Team, Scenes of Crime teams and Collision Investigators, in addition to the patrol and neighbourhood Teams. A single storey Vehicle Maintenance workshop and facility for Dog Handling will also be included.
This is the largest project undertaken by Devon & Cornwall Constabulary (D&CC) for over 20 years.
James Brady, Building Manager, at Midas Construction, said:
"With the completion of the roof, which has proved technically challenging both in design and build, we are now concentrating our efforts on the internal finishes and external surfaces. Due to the teamwork and effort put in by the Client, Site Management, Designers and Sub Contractors the project is progressing admirably and will be completed ahead of schedule".
Andy Morris, head of buildings and estates, said:
"I am really pleased with how the project is progressing, it is a real credit to all those involved. The project remains on budget and significantly ahead of programme. We hope to have all buildings fully operational in the current calendar year. I remain confident that the new facilities will meet their objectives, supporting 21st century policing in Cornwall."
The New Police Station will be a highly energy efficient building which is naturally ventilated with high levels of insulation. Automatically controlled windows will allow air to flow across and cool the exposed concrete ceiling. The windows close during the day allowing the cool temperature stored in the concrete to be released. This together with extensive solar shading to the south west facing elevations will provide a comfortable working environment during the summer months. In addition Solar panels will be positioned on the south elevation to pre-heat hot water for the showers, and a rainwater harvesting system will provide water to the main toilet block.
