Midas host dinner for CBI and Welsh Minister

( Last Updated: 27-10-2009 )

Midas Group recently hosted a dinner at Celtic Manor Resort for the CBI of Wales, attended by Jane Davidson, Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Housing for the Welsh Assembly Government, photo attached.

Seated – Dave Haskell, Midas Construction, Lex Cumber, Mi-space, Jane Davidson, Minister. Standing – Andrew Johnston, Mi-space and Nigel Webb, Midas Developments.

The central topic of conversation for the evening was sustainability and Code 5 and 6 housing in Wales as well as wider discussions as to how the housing industry can progress the Green agenda that they have to respond to over the next five to ten years.

Midas and their social housing business; Mi-space, gave a presentation to the assembled group about the RuralZED Zero Carbon house that was built in three days at an exhibition in Earls Court in 2008.  The house is the only existing open market and inhabited house in Britain with a Code 6 certification and a good indication of the shape of new build housing in the UK.  Debate surrounding the table was wide and varied and tried to strike a balance between achieving higher sustainability standards in social and open market housing, and the commercial pressures of the open market in recession.

Also hosting the dinner was Midas Construction who plays a vital part within the Midas Group, undertaking a number of significant construction projects in South Wales over the last ten years.

David Haskell, Divisional Director, Midas Construction Wales, said:

"A very successful evening was had by all of us which included a lively debate!

The Welsh Assembly Government has an aspiration of requiring all buildings that are built after 2011 to be zero carbon, Midas Group look forward to help turn that desire into reality."

Andrew Johnston, Executive Director, Mi-space said:

"Jane Davidson is a breath of fresh air and it was fascinating to hear about the legislative context prescribed by the WAG, as well as the overriding vision that is going to shape the future of construction in Wales.  It's wonderful to see the WAG take a lead on sustainability and considering the profound impact that CO² reduction will have on the future wealth and health of Wales and the UK.   Mi-space and the Midas Group are part of the solution."

23 people attended the dinner, other guests included -  Newydd Housing Association, United Welsh Housing Association, Capita Symonds, Cowlin, Redrow Homes, and King Sturge amongst others.
