Midas has started work on the Tremough campus

( Last Updated: 06-01-2009 )

Midas Construction, part of the Midas Group, is delighted that it has started the construction work for the third phase of the student accommodation at the Tremough Campus in Penryn. The campus is shared and jointly managed by University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter. The Tremough Campus is the higher education hub of the Combined Universities in Cornwall, which is leading the economic regeneration of the county. Over £105m of European Objective One and other funding has already been invested in Phase One and Two of Tremough's development, and Phase Three is currently being planned.

With Midas having already completed over 800 units at the student village, this third phase of development will comprise 427 additional ensuite living spaces as well as a laundry area, a further extension to the Porter's Lodge and a staff flat.

Midas Operational Project Manager, Keith Hosen, said:

"We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter, helping to deliver their exceptional vision and dedication to creating first class student facilities in the region. The next group of apartments will be similar to the previous ones - in that they will be some of the most comfortable and modern halls of residence you'll find anywhere in the UK."

Midas was the contractor for the original work carried out in 2003 which was for 500 residents, plus the second phase in 2006 of a further Student Village of 301 residences and two Staff Flats.

Murdo Mace, Executive Director, Midas Construction, said:

"We are very pleased to continue our work with the Combined Universities in Cornwall at the Tremough Campus. This has been an exciting project for Midas and we look forward to seeing the third phase through to completion during the autumn of 2009."

University College Falmouth's Rector, Professor Alan Livingston, added:

"As our plans to become Arts University Cornwall by 2012 gather momentum, we are delighted to invest in yet another phase of high quality student accommodation that reflects the quality of the learning environment that University College Falmouth provides. Midas has a proven track record of delivering a high standard of accommodation on time and on budget, and we look forward to welcoming a future generation of students to these new facilities next year."

Professor Matthew Evans, Provost of the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus, said:

"Applications to study with us on the Tremough Campus rose by a staggering 164% this year with 500 new students arriving this autumn. While our reputation as one of the UK's top 20 universities clearly plays a large part in this growth, our success is also down to the unique location of the Campus and the excellent facilities provided for students. We are committed to offering top quality student accommodation and look forward to working with Midas to deliver this next phase of developments."

The campus is set in 95 acres, and is located close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth.
