Leading construction and property services company, Midas, has recycled 70% of the waste it produces and in doing so saved £200,000 in the process.
Products being recycled by the company include off-cuts of plasterboard, which can be re-used to produce new plasterboard. Packaging is also being segregated so that it can be composted rather than going to landfill. Waste minimisation is a key environmental target for Midas, and has resulted in the company reducing spend on skips, which take the waste off the construction sites that the company is working on.
David McDermott, CSR Director for Midas, said: "As a company that is a major provider of construction and refurbishment services to the environmentally conscious food retail sector, we wanted to demonstrate our green credentials.
"We have always recycled materials but we are now more rigorous at doing it, including such materials as timber and metals. We have also looked for an environmental commitment from our subcontractors and getting them to concentrate on their waste generation and ways to reduce it."
Another cost-saving environmental initiative that Midas has embarked upon is to reduce business mileage of its vehicle fleet, which is currently 25,000 miles a day, by five per cent through more effective resource management.
Says McDermott: "We are currently identifying individuals with high mileage and looking at how we can reduce it by deploying other team members who are more ideally located to the job in hand and by making greater use of technology."
