Six riders have recently completed the famous Lands End to John O'Groats cycle ride in nine days. The ride was organised by Mi-space; the affordable housing company of the Midas Group, and was fundraising for Shelter and Shelter Cymru.
At a fraction over 1,000 miles, the route saw the six riders cover distances of between 100 and 130 miles every day, whilst joined on sections by guests.
Supported by two drivers the team rode the route using a combination of A and B roads. This covered the distance in the most efficient manner possible, but avoided the most dangerous roads where possible.
Riders from Mi-space, United Welsh Housing Association, The Guinness Trust, the NHS and Oxford Brookes University took part making the team more of a motley crew, than a Tour de France Peleton (line of bicycles).
The riders raised approximately £10,000 to be split between the two Shelter charities. They also broke two wheels, went through three tyres, purchased one brand new bike (due to the demise of one), ate between 5,000 and 8,000 calories a day each and did not see a drop of rain for the entire journey (which they believe may be a record in itself!).
The organiser and team member Lex Cumber from Mi-space, said:
"The ride was amazing. The team did incredibly well to cover that sort of distance considering absolutely none of them had any kind of long distance cycling experience. Two of them got on a bike for the first time since they were kids only four months ago, that's a great achievement! It reminded us that with team work you can achieve incredible things and that Britain is one of the most beautiful islands in the world."
