John Lewis at Home Store

1-11 Sidwell Street, Exeter

Project: The first John Lewis at Home Store concept located in the city centre.

John Lewis is moving into Exeter's former Debenhams building after agreeing a lease with the building's owners, Land Securities. The first three floors of the building will be dedicated to retail, while two floors will house backroom staff. The store, which will also have a cafe, will be the latest in the John Lewis at Home concept. It will be the first 'John Lewis at Home' in a city centre rather than an out-of-town trading estate and is due to open between September and November 2011. The new shop will focus on furniture, furnishing accessories, electrical and home technology. It will feature bed linens, lighting, towels, glass, china, gifts and crockery. It will also stock electrical goods like freezers, fridges, cookers, electrical equipment and laptops.

Midas are currently changing the layout of the store, which involves major structural alternations to the existing building, including the relocation of the central escalator. An additional floor will be added to the existing front single storey entrance area. The formation of the new two storey entrance area will include a two storey glass facade which will allow the new escalators to be viewed from the street and the cafe will look out over the street.
