Geoffrey Pope Building, School of Biosciences

University of Exeter, Streatham Campus, Exeter

Project: Midas carried out refurbishment works for the School of Biosciences at University of Exeter to provide a modern study environmental.

Midas Interiors have been appointed on Phase II of the refurbishment of the Geoffrey Pope building for the School of Biosciences at the University of Exeter. Our appointment comes on the back of a number of successful projects with the University, including Phase I of the project. The Geoffrey Pope building is undergoing refurbishment to enhance its research and teaching facilities, and to support the School's ambitions to be a leading international centre for research and teaching in biosciences.

The scope of the project is extensive and shall provide a modern study environment with excellent resources for teaching and research, including new teaching laboratories. Features of the project include a fully operational BSL3 research suite, three high quality research facilities to BSL2 standard, four specialist laboratories to cater for all chemical, biochemical and analytical needs, an extended teaching laboratory with improved support facilities and a state of the art aquarium.

Outside the laboratory areas we shall be providing new staff offices, an integrated student support office, flexible seminar space, new study facilities for postgraduates, improved access to the building and a fully refurbished foyer with networked PCs, Wi-Fi, networking space and vending facilities. There shall also be significant refurbishment activities to circulation areas, toilets and the plant rooms.

The project will remaining a live working environment throughout the project. The building is located within the heart of the University's main campus and shall also remain occupied throughout the duration of the works. This provides significant challenges to site Health and Safety, an area that has been fully scrutinised during the tendering period.

Successful working relationships were established with the University of Exeter staff which contributed to Midas being awarded the main fit out works in September 2008.
