Midas was taken on by Focus DIY to build a single-storey retail unit of around 2,500m2 on the site of an existing small DIY store, which in turn was built over an old petrol station.
As well as this challenge, works were affected by the requirement that Section 106 Highways work was completed before building commenced at the front, and the client needing to be open at the rear ahead of the busy Christmas trading period. Both of these parameters were achieved.
A new entrance was built and a busy “A” road widened, and a large tarmac car park in front of the store.
To deal with the old petrol station, including voids where service pits and old petrol tanks had been removed, the ground was vibro compacted. Then concrete was laid on top of a continuous gas membrane on top of proprietary polystyrene honeycomb blocks to channel the gas away to perimeter vents.
Midas used a steel portal for the framework of the new building, with a complex gable end closest to the nearest residential property. The roof was built up profiled metal, as were the rear and end elevations, while the front elevation was made of smooth surface profile composite panels on top of facing brickwork.
A glazed entrance lobby was fitted with sliding doors, and these was also an external compound, partly glazed over and surrounded by 5m high steel fencing, to form the gardening department.
Internally work included constructing a two-storey office block with toilet facilities, canteen, offices and plant room.
