Diagnostic and Treatment Centre

Plymouth

Project: Midas turned a disused warehouse into a medical centre that will carry out 16,000 orthopaedic operations over the next five years.

The £8.1 million project saw Midas turn a warehouse at Plymouth International Business Park, Derriford, into the South West Peninsula Orthopaedic Treatment Centre.

The centre will provide the orthopaedic capacity for all health trusts in the South West to achieve their NHS waiting time targets.

It includes two operating theatres, 28 inpatient beds, an outpatient clinic suite, a day case admission and recovery unit, and a physiotherapy gym. The centre also includes day rooms, a coffee lounge, laboratories, a pharmacy and an x-ray unit.

Midas was appointed by Care/Afrox UK Healthcare to carry out the conversion and associated new build works to the centre, which had to conform to strict HTM/MBM healthcare standards.

The two operating theatres, situated on the ground floor, are complemented by anaesthetic rooms, theatre prep rooms, a recovery ward and Theatre Sterilisation Storage Unit (TSSU) that contains the latest autoclave sterilisers and washer disinfector systems. The theatres work via a negative pressure environment enclosed by a positive pressure ‘clean corridor’.
