DIY Store

Kingswinford,

Project: This single storey retail unit of some 2500m² was built on the site of an existing small DIY store.

The site had been an old petrol station.  The ground was vibro compacted to fill in voids where service pits and old petrol tanks had been removed.  The foundations were reinforced concrete.  Ground slab was concrete laid on top of a continuous gas membrane on top of proprietary polystyrene honeycomb blocks to channel the gas away to perimeter vents.

Framework was steel portal with a complex gable end closest to the nearest residential property.  The roof was built up profiled metal, as were the rear and end elevations and the front elevation was smooth surface profile composite panels on top of facing brickwork.  There was a glazed entrance lobby with sliding doors.  There was also an external compound parting glazed over to form the gardening section, surrounded by 5m high steel fencing.  Internally there was a small 2-storey office block with toilet facilities, canteen, offices and plant room all to standard Great Mills layout.  The fit out was done directly by the client's contractors within our programme period of 26 weeks.    The programme period was affected by the local planning and highways department who insisted on Section 106 Highways work being completed before commencement at the front and the client wanting to be open for Christmas at the rear.  Both of these parameters were achieved.

The 106 works comprised a new entrance and road widening to a busy ‘A' road in a town.  There was an extensive tarmac car park and access road to the front of the store.
