The College Ystrad Mynach in Hengoed has got a bit closer to its new £5m building this week, reaching the highest point in the build.
Midas Construction is building a new four storey teaching facility and link building for the College. The new build will comprise 13 classrooms, a new library, improved catering facilities and public areas for students, exhibitions, competitions and public events, providing the college with the much needed space for the 14,000 students that walk through its door each year.
In the building of the new block, The College has achieved BREEAM (BR Environmental Assessment Method) excellence rating. Plans include a biomass boiler, natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and a ‘green roof'.
The funding is part of a £50m investment project by the Welsh Assembly Government to improve facilities of Colleges in Wales.
Dave Haskell, Divisional Director, Midas Construction, said:
"We are delighted to be working with The College Ystrad Mynach in the construction of this facility which represents an important part of this South Wales College expansion plan. The building is being built with the environment and sustainability in mind and includes some important features such as the laminated timber frame structure and a planted green roof (sedum roof)."
Bryn Davies, Principal, The College Ystrad Mynach, said:
"It is very exciting to reach this point in the development. The build has generated a lot of interest by both learners and lecturers and it is rewarding to see the progress made. The completed building will provide us with leading edge teaching amenities and public area and we all look forward to getting into the building and using the very latest equipment housed in surroundings of the highest and most modern standards".
The College has six sites throughout the Caerphilly Borough with each offering its own unique learning environment. The College has more than 14,000 students ranging from school leavers to adult mature students and offers both academic and vocational courses at entry and degree level.
