Asda Bideford is a new construction of a 49,500 sq ft store in Bideford Devon. Being some 1.5 miles outside of town the store is constructed in the car park of the existing retail outlet Atlantic Village. The construction comprises of a steel frame founded on isolated pad foundations, including an integral rear mezzanine structure over which is a perimeter mansard with a standing seam metal decking.
Internally to the roof there is a flat roof area covered with Sana and this area contains necessary mechanical and refrigeration plant. The facades comprise of a mixture of the traditional white wall, curtain walling and the addition of cedar and render to suit the existing retail outlet. Internal on the first floor lies the colleagues area and associated requirements such as the main office, toilets, colleagues restaurant and comms rooms, whilst the ground floor contains the usual retail pre-requisites such as ATM, George area, sales floor, cash room, customer cafe and associated warehousing ,cold rooms etc.
The works also comprise of regulation and remodel of the existing car park to suit the store frontage and various enablement works that harmonise the new store to the existing facilities. In addition to these works are highways works, which are subject to planning condition such as the introduction of extra lanes to the retail entrance and a new roundabout off site (some 1.8 miles away).
Constraints during the work included the location of the works (in the existing retail outlet car park), the proximity of the existing buildings and planning/ operational conditions imposed by the local authority for the highways works. Works were completed to programme and the site team worked with the Client to manage change, delivery and ensured that the project was delivered to budget aspirations.
